Malcolm Roger Payne (1927 - 1997) was Crowborough's first real historian as well as being a teacher and author of a number of papers on education, short stories, essays and poetry. His historical works include:

  • Crowborough - The Growth of a Wealden Town (1985)
  • Bygone Crowborough (1987) written in conjunction with Luther Batchelor
